
Mission Statement
The P.R.I.D.E. Fdn., Inc.
is a non-profit organization whose primary
objective is to provide assistance for disabled and elderly persons. The
purpose is to suggest solutions in the areas of homemaking, independence in
dressing, personal grooming, and fashionable apparel.
P.R.I.D.E. Fdn., Inc.,
based in Groton, Connecticut, is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization whose main
objective is rehabilitation assistance for the disabled and elderly in the areas
of home management and independence in dressing and personal grooming.
Consulting services are provided to families, agencies, and health organizations
dealing with special needs of the disabled and elderly.
P.R.I.D.E. tries to meet "special
needs for special people"...needs that are not presently met by clothing
manufacturers. Resources are available for the adaptation and modification
of garments so that everyone can wear fashionable, comfortable, and well-fitted
clothing. Custom designed patterns are provided for individual needs.
P.R.I.D.E. provides discussion leaders
for community outreach and assistance to health agencies, social service
groups, and volunteer organizations. The agency can respond to meet a specific
need of the disabled or elderly and members of their families; this includes
sewing assistance, special patterns, training in sewing machine operations,
as well as suggested household devices for use in the kitchen, bedroom,
and bathroom.

Children's Clothing Modifications
An informational list developed especially as
an aid to parents of physically challenged children. The listed resources
can be used for various disabilities and offer suggestions to provide solutions
to clothing, grooming, and home management problems. The emphasis is on
patterns, ready-to-wear clothing, and suitable fashions for children. This list
is very helpful to parents and health care team members to dress children
easily. Dressing With Pride
A 116-page book which provides step-by-step instructions
and clearly defined graphics explaining the modification and alteration
of store purchased clothing for special needs of the disabled and elderly.
The down-to-earth, practical guide is written in laymen's terms and is
very easy to follow. Filled with useful sewing information, the book includes
shopping tips, a wardrobe planning guide, patterns for custom designs,
and suggested adaptive devices for dressing and grooming. Fashion Accessibility and Clothing Lesson Plan
A curriculum guide and in-service training manual which is a resource
for members of the health care team and educators involved in training
and providing service to the disabled and elderly. The plan is designed
for hands-on workshop session(s) with emphasis on the rehabilitation process.
Included is an extensive list of home management devices accompanied by
descriptive illustration. Student activities, discussion topics, bibliography,
and handout worksheets are incorporated into the guide. Scoliosis
This article covers Kytosis and Scoliosis fitting
problems. It offers dressing suggestions for ready-to-wear garments. Directions
are given to customize or individually fit garments. Pattern alterations
with specific directions are included.
Lecture - Presentation A professional staff member is available to conduct
a seminar or workshop for groups of all sizes and interests in rehabilitation.
The presenter utilizes a complete wardrobe of clothing to demonstrate various
methods to alter garments. Included is an exhibition of easy-to-make adaptive
equipment for home management. Time frame is open and individualized so
that selected topics can be discussed with appropriate visuals.
Travel Trunk Show
A
wardrobe showcase of approximately 30-35 sample garments for men, women, and
children. The Travel Trunk Show includes
clothing suitable for daytime wear, for work or home activities, adapted
sleepwear for convalescing, clothing for wheelchair user, and other special
needs. Specific modifications are identified and labeled on each garment. This
valuable resource increases fashion awareness with emphasis on desirable
fabric selection, current fashion, comfort, and economy in dress. It can be
used as a display (exhibit) or in a demonstration/workshop activity.
Rental, handling and shipping costs are billed separately by invoice.
Advance scheduling is required to allow ample delivery time.
